The Democratic Alliance in Overstrand condemns in the strongest possible terms the deeply disturbing threats attributed to the leader of the Land Party in Hermanus, directed at directed at South African citizens of Somalian descent in Zwelihle because of their perceived political allegiance.
What makes these threats concerning is that the voters being targeted are naturalised South African citizens who enjoy exactly the same constitutional rights, including the right to vote freely, as every other South African citizen.
All citizens of our country are entitled to exercise their democratic rights without fear of intimidation, victimisation or violence.
Threatening to forcibly remove people from their homes or businesses because of their political preferences or national origin is unacceptable in a constitutional democracy.
No political leader has the right to dictate where South African citizens may live, which political party they may support, or how they must vote.
The social media statement by the Land Party leader raises serious concerns about electoral intimidation and the potential incitement of xenophobic violence, particularly the explicit reference to 30 November as a date on which these residents may face forced removal from their community.
The DA has requested the South African Police Service (SAPS) to conduct a thorough threat assessment regarding the safety of the affected South African citizens of Somalian descent, including the credibility of the threats, the potential for organised violence and the preventative measures necessary to protect their lives, families, homes and businesses.
We will also refer the matter to the relevant electoral authorities for investigation and appropriate action.
We recognise the genuine frustrations surrounding unemployment and economic opportunities in Zwelihle. However, these challenges cannot be used to justify xenophobia, intimidation or threats against fellow South African citizens.
We call on all residents of Zwelihle to reject violence and intimidation, and on political leaders to exercise responsible leadership rather than exploit community frustrations for political gain.
Citizenship is not conditional on political allegiance. The right to vote freely is not a privilege granted by political leaders, it is a constitutional right that must be defended.
The DA will stand firmly against any attempt to intimidate voters or threaten the safety of residents, regardless of their background or political affiliation.
Zwelihle belongs to its people, not to any political party. The Constitution protects everyone, and the law must apply equally to all.
