The Democratic Alliance will write to the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport requesting Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) appear before the committee to brief members on security at Cape Town International Airport.
This follows the hijacking of a woman in the Airport’s garage earlier this week.
ACSA must provide a detailed briefing on security measures in its parking facilities, including access control, CCTV coverage, patrol deployments and the number of vehicle-related crimes recorded at the airport over recent years. The public deserves clarity on the scale of the problem and what is being done to prevent such crimes.
While the swift response by SAPS led to the arrest of four suspects, the incident raises serious concerns about preventative security measures at one of South Africa’s busiest airports.
This is not the first security-related incident associated with the airport precinct. Earlier this year, a suspected hijacker was arrested on the N2 airport approach after allegedly threatening a motorist at gunpoint.
South Africans and tourists should be able to make use of our country’s airports without fear of becoming victims of violent crime.
The DA expects ACSA to provide clear answers on what security measures are currently in place, whether any vulnerabilities have been identified in parking facilities, and what additional steps will be taken to better protect airport users.
