The Democratic Alliance welcomes the safe return of the Marion Island overwintering and support team aboard the SA Agulhas II, following decisive intervention by Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Willie Aucamp. The Minister was at the harbour today to personally welcome the team home.

The annual relief voyage to Marion Island – responsible for delivering critical fuel, food, equipment, and personnel to South Africa’s remote southern ocean research station – was severely disrupted by fuel supply shortages linked to instability arising from the conflict involving Iran. The specialised polar-grade fuel required for operations in sub-Antarctic conditions could not be guaranteed by suppliers within the required timeframe.

This created a potentially serious situation on the island, where generator fuel reserves and critical food stocks were under increasing pressure. Given the extreme remoteness and harsh environmental conditions of the Prince Edward Islands, any prolonged delay carried significant operational and human risk.

Minister Aucamp acted swiftly and responsibly to ensure the safe evacuation and return of the team. In circumstances where the wellbeing of South Africans stationed in one of the most isolated environments on earth was at stake, urgent leadership was required and provided.

This interruption is without precedent in the modern operational history of the Prince Edward Islands since South Africa annexed the territory in 1947. Marion Island, the larger of the two islands, hosts globally significant meteorological, oceanographic, and biological research programmes that have operated continuously for decades and contribute substantially to international climate and biodiversity science.

The Minister has further committed to turning the SA Agulhas II around within approximately two weeks, weather permitting, in order to minimise disruption to critical scientific operations on the island. A replacement team, together with replenished supplies, is expected to resume the mission as soon as conditions allow.

Importantly, the Minister has also committed to conducting comprehensive operational debriefings with the returning personnel to strengthen future logistical planning, supply chain resilience, and voyage preparedness.

The DA is proud of the calm, proactive, and responsible leadership demonstrated by Minister Aucamp during a highly challenging operational situation.
