My Fellow South Africans

As we begin 2026, a year of campaigning towards local government elections, our focus is clear: getting South Africa working by creating jobs, delivering services, and fighting against crime and corruption. Across South Africa, citizens are demanding competent leadership where they feel it most: in their communities and in their local councils. This year’s elections will be a defining moment for every voter who wants practical solutions rather than empty promises.

Recently I have been deeply involved in addressing the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak threatening our agricultural sector. Protecting South African farmers, food security, and rural livelihoods is urgent. Government must act decisively and the DA will continue pushing for effective, science-based containment measures that safeguard both jobs and animal health.

Our nation has also been reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of safety: we were all shocked by, and grieved, the tragic traffic accident in Gauteng that claimed the lives of learners shortly after the release of the national matric results. Young people represent the hope and promise of South Africa’s future. Safeguarding our learners is safeguarding our nation’s future and we cannot put their lives at risk. Like so many communities in South Africa demanding safety, we must protect all South Africans – particularly our young people.

On the global stage, South Africa must play a constructive role, guided by respect for sovereignty, human rights, democracy and international law. See my recent opinion piece on this issue. As the World Economic Forum met in Davos recently (an event which I monitored remotely) we were once again reminded of the vital role that South Africa must play in engaging constructively to attract investment for job creation and economic growth.

This year, however, our focus must remain firmly on voters’ priorities at local level. Our goal is clear: to become the largest party in as many municipalities as possible. The stronger our record in local government, the stronger our platform going into the 2029 national elections. The breakthrough of 2024 (reducing the ANC’s majority to below 50% and expanding the DA’s support) renewed hope for millions of South Africans. Since then, we have already seen the DA making a difference in government, from stopping a tax increase to delivering tangible wins in DA-led departments. We must build on our position, inspired by what we have already created. At local level, 2026 must be the year we get South Africa working again.

Yours in service,

John Steenhuisen
